Canucks Edge Oilers in Double-Overtime Thriller to Claim First in Pacific
Elias Pettersson ended one of the most electric regular-season games Rogers Arena has seen in years, wristing a shot through Leon Draisaitl's skates at 6:14 of the second overtime to give the Vancouver Canucks a 4-3 win over the Edmonton Oilers.
The victory moves Vancouver four points clear of Edmonton at the top of the Pacific Division with eleven games remaining — their largest division lead since the 2011 Stanley Cup run.
Connor McDavid tied the game at 3-3 with 47 seconds remaining in regulation on a power-play tap-in that silenced the building. But Pettersson, who had been held without a point in the previous four games, emphatically announced his return with his 35th goal of the season.
"This one means something," said goaltender Thatcher Demko, who stopped 42 of 45 shots. "Not just the standings. The way we responded after they tied it — the character in this room is different this year."
The game was the sixth meeting between the teams this season, with Vancouver holding a 4-2 edge in the season series. The teams face each other once more in the final week of the regular season in a matchup that could have major playoff seeding implications.
