Coastal GasLink Completes Final Golden Weld in Northern BC
The Coastal GasLink pipeline reached a milestone today as construction crews completed the final weld on the 670-kilometre natural gas pipeline connecting Dawson Creek to the LNG Canada export facility in Kitimat, British Columbia. The $14.5 billion project, which has been the subject of intense legal, political, and environmental controversy since its inception, is now expected to begin commercial operations in the second quarter of 2027.
TC Energy, the project's developer, described the completion as a "transformative moment for Canadian energy." Environmental groups and some Wet'suwet'en hereditary chiefs, who have opposed the pipeline's route through their unceded territory, reiterated their objections and signalled their intention to continue legal challenges.
The pipeline will feed LNG Canada's Phase 1 facility, which has a capacity of 14 million tonnes per year and represents the largest private-sector infrastructure investment in Canadian history.
